At nine years old, Lola is shot and loses an eye. She doesn’t remember who shot her. She discovers the bullet in an x-ray and begins her search for the truth. As she advances in her investigation, she distances herself from her family and realizes that the injury suffered is doubled by the concealment, which does not allow her to focus. The reconstruction of the event reveals not only that truth but others that emerge throughout the novel. In «Lo último que vi con mis ojos» Marcela Chaoul skillfully combines two stories: that of the protagonist’s healing, who still suffers the physical and emotional consequences of family abuse when facing adult life, and that of the reconstruction of the shooting scene that would mark her future. Forcefulness, sensitivity and irony intersect in a novel that explores the strength of the human spirit and its ability to find beauty in the midst of adversity.
